HISTORY

ROYAL CHILDHOOD

Raised in the opulence of the royal palace, Nikolai was largely neglected outside of moments when his rambunctiousness and experiments created enough of a disruption to draw his parent's attention. A whipping boy, Dominik, was commissioned and studied alongside Nikolai. He was punished for Nikolai's infractions, something Nikolai found deeply unfair. When Dominik was sent away, Nikolai was motivated to parse out how to charm his way through the court to improve his friend's lot, and then, by extension, grew more familiar with the mismanagement and failures of the Ravkan royal family. It was during this time that he became familiar with the whispered rumors that he was a bastard, not a trueborn son of his father.

FIRST ARMY

Deferring the ceremonial service his elder brother opted for, Nikolai enlisted as any other Ravkan citizen and served with distinction in the First Army without any special treatment. He saw firsthand the horrors of war, and the toll it took on his people, as well as forged close bonds with other soldiers. And as he served alongside the rank and file of the First Army, his understanding of the suffering of the Ravkan people broadened, further cementing Nikolai's desire to fix all of it.

DEATH OF THE KING

The majority of Nikolai's work to better Ravka had taken place behind the scenes. He had approached all his plans for reform at a slant, without any expectation of wielding the kind of power the crown would give him. Witnessing the death of the King, his presumptive father, and the crown prince, his elder brother Vasily, and rapidly realizing that their deaths placed the crown upon his head forced Nikolai to realign all his plans for the future. It pushed him to step into the role of leader in a very public way, while also putting the responsibility of saving Ravka squarely on his shoulders. Whatever path Nikolai had expected to take as the second son, maneuvering Ravkan reforms into being from the background, it closed to him the moment the Darkling's attack sliced the line of succession down by two.

The monstrous winged form Nikolai was cursed with in canon has been subsumed and amplified into his monstrous form in Rubilykskoye.
Reaching a towering height of seven feet, Nikolai sprouts massive black-feathered wings while his hands and feet crack and elongate into razor-sharp talons. Feathers cover his shoulders, fading to gold at the nape of his neck and blend into his hair. Nikolai's face remains almost entirely intact, unchanged apart from glowing golden eyes. The only changes to his face becomes apparent minutes before a kill: the ability of his jaw to unhinge and elongate, displaying a mouthful of viciously sharp fangs capable of tearing his chosen prey apart and devouring in single, massive bites.
Veins stand out across his body, shifting between black and gold as they move over his skin. The massive stretch of his thick feathered wings appear black throughout the hunt, but flare into a dazzling display of bright, fiery gold. As feathers shift to gold, the gold veins grow increasingly prominent to the near total eclipse of the accompanying black. Those viewing the flare of golden veins on his skin and the brilliance of the golden feathers on display becomes overwhelming, stunning prey with the display.

Though Nikolai will no longer transform nightly, the combination of his canon monstrous form with his zadza monster will shorten the eight week transformation time-frame down to six week, with Nikolai's day to day experience of monstrous urges and desires manifesting far more strongly and needing near-daily satisfaction to stave off the rapidity of the transformation process.
Once fully transformed, the monster makes a game of stalking his chosen victims. He will trail them from the shadows, or sweep overhead, while black-feathered and cloaked by his wings to avoid outright detection. The monster prefers an audience, and will seek to attack its prey when they've entered a public area or joined a group of people. With a sufficient audience acquired, the monster's feathers will shift to it's fiery gold form, illuminating Nikolai's face and transfixing onlookers, immobilizing and holding their attention while he feeds.
If his chosen prey remains isolated and his hunger grows too great, the monster will settle for eviscerating its target in seclusion and then carrying the mangled remains to drop into a public area.
